Snow Dough for DIY Play Snow for Winter Activities

(This post contains Amazon affiliate links. Read my full disclosure.)

Winter is in full swing, but there isn’t snow around us yet, but we really wanted to play with some to go along with this week’s winter theme with the Virtual Book Club for Kids. So we made our own play snow! The snow dough we make is white like snow and there are so many ways to play and learn with it.

The featured book this week is The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. This snow dough along well with the story, especially when we play with it the way the character in the book does!

Make the Play Snow Dough:

I originally wanted to use the basic cloud dough recipe (flour and oil) to make this, but I wanted something a little whiter. We make bright white clay with cornstarch and baking soda, so I wanted to make something similar.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  1. Add all ingredients into a bowl or zip-lock bag.
  2. Mix well, making sure the oil is well distributed. The should be crumbly but moldable.

You may also choose to add glitter or sequins to make is sparkle like real snow. I chose to skip the glitter this time, especially since Little Bro still puts things in his mouth.

Play and Learn with Snow Dough:

We used a white plastic bin to play with our snow dough in. I taped a black piece of paper on the bottom so we could see the bottom when making tracks and then we dumped the snow dough in and got to playing!

Ways to play with Snow Dough to along with The Snowy Day:

Here are some ideas to play with the snow. We had out book out during play for ideas.

  • Pile the snow up to make a path for walking. Or use a toy truck as a snow plow to clear the way.
  • Use fingers as feet to make tracks in the snow.
  • Drag fingers in the snow to make tracks.
  • Use a stick to write in the snow.
  • Pile snow onto things (toy trees, animals, etc.) and give them a shake or smack to see if the snow falls off.
  • Make snow balls.
  • Make a snowman.
