Spring is here, and along with is comes a lot of rain! We made this really pretty earth craft using the rain to help “paint” it.

Materials needed to do this Earth Craft with Rain:
- Cardstock paper
- Something round to trace
- Permanent marker
- Washable markers
- Something heavy (like a rock) or tape
- A rainy day (be sure there isn’t thunder or lightning)
We used card stock paper so it would hold up well under the rain. I was afraid regular printer paper or construction paper would tear. We also tried coffee filters, but if there’s more rain than a quick drizzle, the color will wash out completely. Card stock worked really well for this purpose.
How To Make The Earth Using Rain:
To prepare, I used a canister lid to trace a round shape onto card stock with a permanent marker. A bowl would work well too, just make sure you use something that you don’t mind possibly getting permanent maker on while tracing.
After I had the round Earth shape, my kids used green and blue washable markers to color in the earth how they liked. Big Bro colored the whole thing, and Little Bro colored less of the Earth shape, as you’ll see below, but both turned out really nice.
After the Earths were colored to their liking, we put them out in the rain. It was sprinkling when we did our craft, not a downpour. **Make sure there’s no lightning. This isn’t an activity for a thunderstorm**
You may want to use tape or something heavy, like a rock, to help hold the Earth down if it’s windy.
The rain started as a sprinkle and made the Earths look really neat! The colored slowly bled together.
Here’s Little Bro’s Earth (the one that was more lightly colored in). The colors started blending together on his too.
As more rain collected on the Earth, the colored blended together more and more.
Here’s a closer photo:
After a while, depending on how much rain there is, the colors blend together more and more.
We brought ours in to dry. After they were completely dry, I cut them out.
Here’s Big Bro’s Earth… see how the colors came together? The rain made it have a really pretty blend.
Even using much less marker, Little Bro’s blended together after a while too.
I think they turned out beautifully!
Virtual Book Club For Kids:
This week for the Virtual Book Club for Kids the theme is the Earth. Just in time for Earth Day! Check out the Virtual Book Club For Kids facebook group to join in!
The Featured book is The Earth Book by Todd Parr (clicking the photo below will bring you to Amazon to learn more about the book):
I really enjoy this book. It goes though many things that even young children can do to help our Earth, along with great reasons why. The book also ends with reminder that we can all do our part to help protect the Earth.
